Superintendent's message

Welcome to Fossil Schools Webpage:

I am Jim Smith and I will begin my fifth year serving students and families in our amazing town of Fossil, Oregon.

School year 2019-2020 will be my second year as the district’s superintendent. I could not be more thrilled and excited to continue the great work that has already been accomplished here in our school district over the last decade.

Our district is on solid financial footing, due to our flourishing Distance Learning Program, that this year will have nearly 1000 students.  We have over 70 students in our brick and mortar schools at Fossil Elementary and Wheeler High School.

Fossil School District is a Charter School District, which just means we can do a few things differently in our desire and direction to provide education to our students. Our focus is on Natural Resources.

Our Elementary staff creates lessons during the year that incorporate all the skills, Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Problem Solving, team work, persistence, grit etc., using Natural Resource themes.

Our 7th and 8th graders take a year of gardening and then when they are in high school we take our 9th - 12th graders on two, week long field trips for site based learning. One in the fall and one in the spring*.

These site based experiences focus on 2-3 natural resource products and the economic impact the business has on the region we visit, as well as the state as a whole.

We have discovered that our students thrive and grow during these outings. This approach is truly special to what we want to accomplish with our students to make them positive, product contributors, in the society in which they will eventually make for themselves.

Please browse our website and learn more about what we do.

If you have any questions you can reach the Elementary office at 541-763-4155, or Wheeler high School, 541-763-4146
